Karl was born in Zwishenahn in northern Germany Karl’s father was a sailor and his mother was a nurse and when Karl was 26 his lover denounced him and he was then arrested under 175 of the criminal code which was homosexuality is an “unnatural" act and he was then imprisoned at Neuengamme concentration camp in Hamburg where the "175ers" had to wear a pink triangle but because Karl had training as a nurse he was soon transferred to work at the prisoner hospital at the Wittenberg sub camp during this job He disobeyed a Nazis order of decreasing the bread ration for the patients who were Polish war prisoners and As punishment, he was sent to Auschwitz, where he had to wear a red triangle marked as a “political prisoner” Karl was liberated in Auschwitz in 1945.
